Wondering if anyone has any experiences with this filter system? Going to setup a new 210g and thinking of my options. Thinking of getting a mag drive 12 and hooking either the pentair modular system or a series of ocean clear canisters. On top of that i will have a fx5 full of ceramic rings. Any opinions or experiences? Thanks in advance!

I don't have experience with the Pentair filters, but I will say that Nu-Clear canisters are better than Ocean-Clear in my opinion.

I don't really know anything , but Rainbow Lifegard has raving reviews that I have read - but they are ugly, and take up a lot of space, from what I have seen.
If you go to a store, and see a "platform" with several tan, or white PVC tubes sticking out of it, entangled with smaller pipes and wiring - that's what they are. So ugly...

I started one of my tanks by building a Rainbow system, here is what I learned:

The filters clean well but get dirty and limit flow fast. I had to clean them every 4 days to a week.
Very hard to find replacement parts locally. i had a cap leak and had to mail order, and that took a week.
A mess to clean. Removing the filter can be hard under a cabinet.

I also tried the Nu-Clear. little better, doesn't get dirty as fast but even more of a pain to get the larger filter out from under the cabinet

When I moved up to my 150 I went with a FX5 and have to say I cut down the maintenance by over half. If I were you I would buy another FX5 and set them both up and set back and enjoy your fish.

I maybe wrong but isn't the nuclear canisters obsolete? All the places that I go only carries the ocean clear models. I really like the nuclears better just by how it looks...

So true... Might just go with the ocean clears.

Good info thanks, making me think my options again.

I picked up two more (I own four) Nu-Clears about two months ago, they definitely are still being made. I get about three weeks between changes running an Iwaki MD40 and two canisters, a 100 micron followed by a 25 micron.

May I ask where'd you get them from? Or am I just looking the wrong places....

Ocean-clear canisters have more options than the nu-clear canisters(like the bead filter canister, and the uv canister) and they cost less than the nu-clear canisters, but the nu-clear canisters are more user friendly because of the way you close and lock the canister.
