I'm looking for some new oddball to add to my South American Biotope that I am getting.
I am going to be doing Myleus Rubrippinis and Widebars, L200 green phanton, L128 blue phantom, L191 and L190 pleco, and other larger L numbers, I am also considering a Leoporinus. There will be driftwood and sand maybe some fake or hardy live plants. The tank is a 6' 125 gallon.
I'd like to have some sort of a South American Monster/predatory,. I have always been a fan of wolffish but have never kept one because they grow very big and have to be kept by themselves or so I have been told. I really love the Hi-Fin or Rainbow Wolffish. I have seen various information on these guys some say they are the passive species of wolffish while others say they still have to be kept alone. What do you guys think about rainbow wolves? Should I consider getting one or pass?
If no rainbow wolf, what other South American Predators should I consider? Doesn't have to be a characin it can be an oddball in general.

Rainbow wolf fish hold be ok. Get about 8-10in. Should be fine with your tankmates. Will pick and try to eat anything smaller than itself. Will need clean water with all those poop machines you got, plecos.

Ok awesome!!! :) I will give it a shot. Water changes are going to be done every other day or so.

Will be fine with your pelvis as long as you don't have the exception which would be an overly aggressive fish. But in general they aren't bad at all, only towards there own should you find issues.

Awesome! Thank you.

I have a gold wolf and it has been THE toughest species of wolf I've ver tried to cohab. I have 4 wolves here 18"+ and 2 more above a foot, 1 under a foot and this azzhole. My Aimara gets along better with tankmates then my gold. Its a friggin terror. Good luck in your ventures but IF it was me, I'd stick to red tailed cudas and enjoy the peaceful tank.

The gold wolffish are nice. Tough decision. Although wolfs are quite rare up here the only ones I seeare the common wolfs but I think they can't be trusted with tankmates unless I buy the real small 2'' ones.
What other oddballs do you think would fit? I wish pacu didn't get so huge.

Gold wolves and rainbows are different behavior wise ime. I will agree my gold can be a jerk, but not as much as you say yours is; though that may be because the only fish he's above in the pecking order is the suncat but I've only seen him do anything twice or simply because they're different specimens with their own personality. Others haven't reported as much of issue as well from my reading. Ime rainbows are less aggressive and less active though.

DB's suggestion of red tail cudas is a good one, they're nice looking fish imo. Haven't had the pleasure of keeping any however. I've kept small fish with common wolves, but I found that the small fish had to already be established in the tank before the wolf, any attempt in trying to introduce a similar sized fish after the wolf was already introduced resulted in a full belly for the wolf.
