Good size tank yes colors are with genetics too but you should have good water and space too as for your tank size it's good for 2 adult size fh's assuming you divided your tank one of the best food to feed them is ching mix a little expensive though it brings out the kok and good colors specially if it's in their genes, don't over feed them or power feed them yes it might make them big faster but you shorten their lives too 2x is enough.

You don't want to pay more than $20.. haha.. you made it sound like you had a bank of anything under $1200, you can afford.. but yeah.. most fish will cost you if you want quality.. because people have to grow them out... so that adds to the charge a little, but then.. looks will determine for the most part.

I can see spending $100 - $200.. on a nice flowerhorn.. that's just me.. hopefully when you breed these, you cull out the quality fish from the low quality.. I don't wanna see the market flooded with crap.
I agree, it's hard to get a quality FH for that cheap, unless you buy fry and then you're not going to know how they'll turn out. I bought one for $20 and it's turning out great, I got lucky... http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94791&page=2

My FH's I payed 8$ each for are all looking good all so I think thay will be 7to 8's on a 1 to 10 scale. But I like to watch fish breed so I am Going to try to cross breed with some other fish if thay don't end up looking good thay will be feeders

a friend of mine who breeds FHs isolates them in single aquariums, they are fed with color and Kok enhancers everyday. every morning, he feeds them shrimps and prawns.

hes got about a thousand fries in his 120 G about 2-3 " lenght. he has this slotted aquariums where he grows seected fries. he got this single batch and what he does is to grow the isolated ones fast and seells them when they reach 5-7 inches long. after selling the larger ones, he takes some from the large tank and isolates them in the slotted tanks. the cycles goes again.

the gap when i saw the fries in the large tank versus the ones isolated was so large, the ones isolated are full colored large Koked while the ones on the large tank are dark, less pearls and relatively small.
OK,I'll ask....what's KOK? I just bought my first little FH's ,about 2 inches. Both look like good prospects.Bought at lfs and was told by the owner that it was best to keep them alolne. He said it was best because, alone there is less stress, you can be very exact about what your feeding and what they are actually eating. He also said with almost all FH's ,you have to separate them sooner or later anyway.
Just what I have been told...Is it good advice?,,,,,I don't know.
I have never kept these guy's before,but I think I'm hooked.Great personality.
So...how fast do FH's grow?I have mine in separate 54 gallon tanks.

8 bucks! 20 bucks! That sounds very good to me. I couldn't find one for under 70 bucks around here. And very hard to find!
