I've been looking at a lot of threads for breeding but i haven't found anything helpful in my situation.

i have a medium-large pair of breeding texas cichlids that i bought maybe 5 or 6 months ago.. I've noticed that the fry get eaten by the female after a week or 2. (I already know that she eats them up because she wants to breed again.)

I've been trying to raise the fry and hopefully grow some out. Would taking her out help this situation? i've heard that the male can be the better parent in some situations. I thought i'd ask you guys first because i don't want to try any trial/error methods on my fish and cause any unnecessary stress.

Try putting the spawn in a seperate growout tank.....A simple 55g with an airstone and heater is good enopugh for even 5 day old fry.....When the fry are still wigglers, fill the tank only half way.....Do a 25% water change evryday.....When the egg sacs are gone, the wigglers are technicaly called fry.....This is the time to feed them BBS, or better know as BABY BRINE SHRIMP......Keep up with the 25-40% water changes everyday.....When the spawn start swimming more like fish , maybe around 3-4 weeks, then move the water level up to normal, fill the tank.......Add a HOB, or Hang-On-Back, filter......TIf the fry are still small, rubberband a sponge device around the intake.......

I have bred many fish in the past.....Not one time have I ever left the spawn in with their parents....To maintain a solid bond between the pair, I always let them hatch the eggs...Right when the brood hatches, I siphon out the wigglers and place them in a seperate growout tank....More fry are gauranteed this way and it is sure joy and educational fun.....

lol talk about starting monster

is this the first fish youve bred? nice for a first one most people start with convicts u skipped a few notches lol. good luck with the babies. first bites is great stuff. also try brine shrimp if u can. and egg is also god. someone here posted a recipe for homemade egg fish food but i dont know where. do a search ;)

lol. yes, it's the first fish that i've bred. i was going to start w/ convicts but i prefer a "challenge". I do have some hikari frozen brine shrimp. i'll make sure to use that. Egg's??? Never heard of eggs as fish food before. I'll check that out! thank's again woofy! :grinno:

Wow, thanks a lot man! I have an empty 30 gallon (tall) and 10 gallon tank. Would you recommend using the 30 (tall) instead of the 10? Also, so i'm not supposed to add a HOB filter until the fry start swimming around like fish? Even if i add a sponge device to keep it from sucking in the fry? Also what temp would you recommend and why do you fill the tank up halfway? Thanks for the helpful info man. :headbang2

use the 30 gallon, with alot of fry in a month they will need some room. Id also say use a hob when they are a month old or more, they need to be strong enough to escape the suction of the hob, and that will not happen for a bit of time.

if i remember correctly it just makes it easier for the fry to find/get to the food :)
