hello mfk members. My goldstripe clown is laying eggs & its their 4th batch. every batch of eggs is twice more from the last batch. 1st & 2nd batch the dad ate them. the 3rd batch hatched while i was at work & my other fish ate them. I tried putting a tile where they layed the third batch but no luck which they layed them on another area. any tips on getting the larvae out of the main tank when they hatch? i know their sensitive which i dont want to use a net.

another question, ive set up a 10 gallon nursery tank & have an LED lamp for computers which isnt that strong. would that work for the larvae or do they need a saltwater lighting?

This is my first time trying to raise these fry so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

clownfish fry typically hatch at night. they are attracted to light, so if you are there when they hatch all you have to do is shine a flashlight in a corner of the tank and use a ladle to scoop them out. you need to have a batch of rotifers going before they hatch so you can feed them. make sure the rotifers are feed good phytoplankton such as Nannochloropsis oculata otherwise your rotifers will have no nutritional value for the fry. after a few days they should be able to eat BBS. Try to wean them off live food as soon as you can and start offering frozen because it is a lot easier. your light is fine just dont leave it on for more than 16 hours a day.

thank you! should i turn off the water pumps at the night when they hatch? my pumps are medium to strong & i have a hang on overflow which might suck out the fry. i have live rotifers going w/phytoplankton. also my main tank salt gravity is at 1.025 and the rotifers is at 1.015, should the nursery tank be the same as the main tank? plus will i shock the rotifers if i add it to the nursery tank w/that gravity?

if your tank can manage the pumps being turned off without overflowing the sump then i would suggest doing it once you see the eggs have hatched. only do it when ur catching them cuz you need water flowing over the eggs and corals if u have any. i would definitly try to make the salinity match because you dont want to shock your rotifers. keep us informed

ok ive set up another bucket of rotifers w/the same salt level of the main tank (gradually ofcourse). do i need to slowly lower the nursery tank salt level when i get the fish larvae in to 1.020?

Tonight is the hatching & i hope everything goes well. The nursery tank is set up w/ the same water quality as the main tank. I have already put some rotifers in the tank by filtering them w/a coffee filter.

Thanks Romania4eva! If everything goes well, hopefully i can post some pictures of the babies later on.

you should just use the water from your main tank for the nursery tank, that way all you have to worry about initially is a temp dfference. then you can do water changes with the same water from the display and at the same time do a water change to the big tank. seems like a win/win. Just my 2 cents

they finally hatch & what a work. Little buggers wont stay still but i got most of them out. their darting around in the nursery tank. Theres a few more eggs that didnt hatch. will they hatch tomorrow night?

Nickman- yeah that would be alot easier to keep at the same level as the main tank but would it hurt the larvae at 1.025? or should i gradually lower the salt level at 1.020 for them to have a better chance at metamorphasis stage?

Thanks for the help!
