I'm still a very new beginner but here is what I have to offer . . . .
Mine are very active and love to be in the front of the tank. I some times can't get any pictures of the other fish in the tank because they want to be right in front of my lens. You can check out some of my photos of my pair in my photo thread in my signature. I bought 2 females initially. And after about 2 months of being together they started to fight constantly. I believe they were looking for a male and since there was none they fought each other. So I went to the LFS I got them from and was told I could either get 1 male for both females and whoever paired up would most likely breed. The chance that they might become overly aggressive towards the lone female were pretty good so the guy recommended I get 2 males. I should have gone with my gut and got 1 male. Within hours of them being in the tank the one set paired off and became extremely aggressive towards the other pair and I had to find them a new home. Which things have seemed to work out really well with that. They are totally fearless from what I can see. Anytime I've had to stick the net in or siphon the gravel they are right there ready to see what I'm doing. For their small 3" size they chase my 5" green sev around. I think they might be trying to breed right now. They are usually very non-aggressive unless they are breeding from what I've been told and read about them. I have them in a 40 breeder and wish I had a much bigger tank, not only for them but for the other fish as well. Even with their small stature IMO they need a nice size tank. This is coming from someone who hates seeing even her Betta in anything smaller than 10 gallons. Lol. But I'm sure a lot of people successfully have them in 20-29 gallons. I personally would say no less than that for that many.
I have found that they are pretty hearty little guys. Mine live happily in my never changing 7.6 pH. All the fish I have seem to be very tolerant of my water parameters. It's also pretty soft. They are great eaters and mine are fed a good variety of foods including flake, NLS cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworms & brine shrimp, even the beef heart I put in for the bichir.
I love mine. They needs lots of space to swim tho. What size tank are you planning on putting them in??
Here is a video of the 2 females the day before I got the 2 males : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GU26NzQd3A
I'm sure you know how to sex them right?
Females have a pink belly & smaller fins.
