Ram ID and sexing.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Uhh no it does not apply, this works some of the time with german blue rams, most gold rams don't even have this spot or the horizontal bars. The best way of sexing rams is by looking at the rays in the dorsal fin, as I said above. Spangle location is not a positive method of sexing.

Now I know, when I had my Rams that method always worked for me if it was golds/Bolivian or Germans but thanks for informing me!

Yeah it's also easier to tell when they are in breeding dress, then the spangle method etc usually works, but when they are stressed etc the dorsal fin technique is best.

its not an bolivian ram its a normal long fin ram, and its a male.
the females are more round in body and often has a redish belly.

Thats a stressed german blue ram :) pretty cool little non aggressive cichlid i'm lookin into getting a pair that or a pair of some kind of appistos

so Male it is!^_^ yay

The tank i got him out of was pretty horrible..I almost screamed at the stupid lady pulling him out of the tank with some rough handling..a tiny bit of water in the bag after I told her i was a 45 min drive from home...she looked at me like i was stupid for wanting more water, at check out she threw the fish on the counter where he had to lay on his side to even be in the water!..I set him up right..grr

low grade or not i think he is lovely ^_^ and is a good start to my little group of rams....what is a good ratio for males and females?
..and ill get some better pics today.

I also believe is its a blue ram...maybe blue gold mix from his color when he does color up..he is still a bit skittish....anything i can do to help him be less shy?

Add dither fish that won't pick on it, honestly if I were you I would add more rams asap before this guy becomes dominant and attacks any new comers, good luck.

Well he is in a 3.5 QT tank by him self..lots of java moss, pennywort, and floating plants.
I will be getting more next month but i don't want to put to many fish in such a tiny tank..water changes are 20% every other day atm.

dithers though... i have allot of guppy fry and a few killifish grow outs I could put in with him but that is about it atm.

more pics...so im gusing he is a male longfin golden ram.

He had more color when the camera is not pointed at him..black down the front fins and allot more gold/yellow/orange..but he seems to be settling in a little better..keeps looking better everyday..hes not a very vigorous eater hoping that will pick up a bit and he will fill out his stomach is still sunken a tiny bit but he noticed the live black worms in the tank and has been hunting them hopefully he will fatten up soon!

I don't think it's pure gold ram. It looks to be a lower quality blue ram or maybe a cross. If you breed blues with golds and then spawn the resulting fry, you can eventually achieve something that's not quite blue or gold. LOL. Gold rams don't have as much blue as this one has.

Either way, it's a longfin ram and it's a male. Keep its water warm -- rams do best with a temp of at least 84 - 85F. Its colors will improve with warm water and good quality food. They seem to do better with several small feedings a day than one or two larger meals. Mine like bloodworms, micropellets, brine shrimp, and freeze-dried blackworms.

hes starting to get a black on his front fins and dorsal fin as well as along his body..ill wait a few more days and try to get some more pics.
