Ram Problem, URGENT, Appears to be Dying, need help!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ahh, next time I'll opt for the longfinned or normal variety... I try to keep my water up as best as I can, temperature is always decently tropical, filter is powerful, I've got extra aeration, live plants, I just don't get it... I just get too attached to the poor fish too fast, it really makes me sad when such a cute one passes on v.v

Blue ram are susceptible to a lot of issue's due to inbreeding - if you can try to find wild caught variants but good luck without ordering them online.

They're nitrate sensitive, need to keep things under 20 ppm optimally.

As was already stated they'll do better in higher temperatures, otherwise I would recommend some plants as they seem to have an effect on their health as well (I've kept blue rams in cooler waters, say 76 degree's in heavily planted tanks just fine, not the case in bare tanks).

I'd say they're definitely an intermediate fish, and would suggest bolivian rams to start with instead depending on your experience levels and tank maintenance habits. They need very clean waters to do well.

Wow, that gave zero insight to your tank parameters lol. Vague doesn't even describe that. "Decently tropical"? What range would that fall into? "Filter is powerful"? So can I have a "powerful" 100gal filter on a 220? "Extra aeration"....extra on top of what? What are temp, amm, nitrate, nitrite? Just something to think about. You need to be more specific when describing your tank in help queries. :)

Cascade filter for up to 50g, have 29g breeder tank, It supplies air xD I've got a air pump to top that, full flourescent, I keep it at 78F-80F Usually 79F.

I keep my rams at about 80/82, do weekly 50% water changes and I've never had a problem. I did get them from a really great source, and have one that I got from a less reputable source. He's always been less active, more skittish, and I can never seem to get more weight on him. I've had him for over a year, but I can still see a difference, so it might just be that yours is weaker than the others. At this point, it sounds like its too late, but you never know, lots of fish have been recovered from very serious conditions and gone on to live great lives. I would do a water change and maybe gradually up the water temp to 80/82. What are you feeding/ how long have you had him?

If any of the other fish are picking on him, I would put him in a quarantine so he could rest and recover if he isn't too far gone. I hope he's okay!
