Today I was doing maintenance on my tank and noticed my ranco was reading high. It was reading 86 when the water temp was 70. I ended up turning the breaker off, after hearing someone say restarting fixed their problem. Fortunately the ranco is reading properly after reboot. Has anyone experienced this? I'm not sure if this would be a probe problem or the unit in this case. Thanks for your time.

Weird, never had any issues with mine. I will see if I can dig out my manual

I'm hoping it's a one off kinda thing, but I'll probably look into restarting my system a little more frequently. This morning temps rose 4 degrees so I think everything is functioning.

Woefulrelic,, I just encountered this "issue" as well. I have a digital thermometer in the overflow inside the tank that I noticed read a little low 76.X F. I looked at my Ranco under the stand with probe in sump and it read 92!

I unplugged for 30 seconds and it did not correct the issue. Jumped from set temp of 82 to 92-94. I then unplugged for a couple of hours and plugged back. My heater turned on and turned off at exactly 82. All is well now, but it definitely causes a bit concern and paranoia. The good news is that reading at 92, the heater won't turn on, but does defeat the purpose nonetheless.

Have you or anyone else encountered this since and/or found root cause? Thanks.

I still have the problem, but my probe will read anywhere from 92 to 152. Restarting doesn't help anymore :(

The original probes are not waterproof.....Did you seal the original? If not just order a replacement waterproof probe or waterproof one of the cheaper ebay replacements yourself. Went through the same thing recently.

A friend of mine had used his in a brewing set up and didn't have trouble with the probe, but I didn't waterproof it and now I regret it. How are they to replace?

Guys, I have the heat shrink. I'm going to give etcsupply a call, it's only been 6months running. So I dont think it's an issue with probe.

I would consider running a heater a few degrees under your ranco setting but not powered by it. It might keep your tank from going full ambient temp, mine didn't last long after the first failure. Titanium heaters don't work for this obviously. I'm fortunate my tank only dropped to 70.

Thanks Woefulrelic. I have titanium heaters, but may look for ones with their own therm. So what are the "best" name and models these days... I've not been keeping track.

So you still have the same issue? Chances are I'll likely have this recurring as well.
