Thanks for the update. OK, I got a replacement probe finally from them. They put on heat shrink again but they did a poor job, and didn't shrink all the way. So ended shrinking it to fit with my heat gun.

You are right, the replacement probe aside from the darker wire has a rubber like probe. It's the replacement model ending in *44, vs. the *48 OEM.

I had the older version of Ranco so had to splice the wires. I used butt splice, then put a heat shrink wrapper. Just some snap shots for reference of my Ranco.

Keep me posted how yours works out.

So far it's reading ~3 degrees below my cheapo electric thermometer. If that's my biggest issue I will be a happy camper.

OK, sounds good. I set my Ranco at 79F. The digital thermometer in the sump reads 78.8 and third, exact thermometer in my internal overflow reads 78.6. I'm good with this, but the biggest concern is long term reliability with the Ranco.

BTW, I suspect you have the newer Ranco where the temp probe wire has a connector into the board for easy replacement.

BTW, the probe for Aqua Logic is $70! Honestly considering the trouble in hindsight I would have gone for their Ranco setup for $130. Once you factor in the presumably better probe and comes prewired. I know part of this hobby is the gear and figuring things out...but not like this LOL.

I've heard enough good things about the older units that I feel like I'm beta testing for others. Without testing it further the aqualogic does seem like a more sound investment all things considered. I don't mind that I bought two units because I get to test a new probe when I set the old one up.

What model number are you using ?

Ranco ETC 111000-000 Prewired Digital Temperature Controller. Wire Gauge 14ga (15 Amps/1800 Watts)

I opted to have them install the double receptacles, but it's fairly basic to do yourself. BTW, my probe is still holding up...but too early to say and I think it needs to be at least 6months test. I do notice that it still reads about .5" higher from my other two digital therm - which is pretty good. But that may be because it just rounds up to two digits.

How's the big tank project coming ;-)

300 to 350 gal. Was thinking 2 x 300 watt heaters. So unless i specifically request two receptacles it will only come with 1 ?

Where did you get yours from ?

They come with none, and you request as many as you need. Some folks just have one and I suppose you can add power strip (as long as you don't overload). I chose just to have two as I'd never use more than two heaters anyway.

ETCSupply. They are a small family business I think. Nice folks, but not always the most responsive as I think they also have bee keeping business...no, that's not a typo LOL...
