Turn your heaters up as high as they go. Ranco will do the rest I run 4-300watt heaters on a Ranco. I don't know how I ever survived without it

Here's what I do:

Ranco set to maintain 78F.

Jager heaters set to 85F.

If the Ranco happens to malfunction and stick in the "On" position, the internal thermostat on the Jagers will shut them off once 85F is achieved, preventing the tank from overheating.

The internal thermostats on the Jagers act as insurance against overheating. Most aquarium heaters have them, so you might as well use them as a back-up.

I bought a temperature controller off ebay for about $18. Size of a pack of smokes. Since I got it I find them all over and they get a good review on Amazon. I'm afraid to use it becsuse it was so cheap. Does anyone know what I am referring to, and have you tried it? I went ahead and got a Ranco? But still have a ts nk I could use it on.

I do the exact same thing. I have 6 Ranco's, one for each of my tanks. I keep the heaters in the sump and the temp probe in the tank. I love these things!

This one? http://www.amazon.com/Elitech-All-P...r=8-2&keywords=digital+temperature+controller

Looks like the reviews on Amazon are mostly positive. The only thing is that the relay looks like it's rated for 10Amps on 110 Volts, whereas the Ranco is rated for 15Amps on 120 Volts. In other words, it can control a maximum of 1,100 watts where as the Ranco can control up to 1,800 watts. This looks like a solid little device as long as you are controlling less than 1,100 watts.

Dang, 6 of 'em? They are awesome. I really like mine too.

I came across a thread on another site where a guy had his temp probe in his tank and his heaters in his sump. His pump failed so water stopped circulating through his system. His temp probe was sensing the temp in the display tank, so it called on the heaters to come on, but the display water was never heated since his heaters were in his sump (keep in mind, at this point he had two separate bodies of water, since his pump died on him). His sump was near boiling when he saw what was going on; all of his live rock (saltwater setup) was nuked.

Based on that guys experience, I think placing the temp probe upstream from heaters but in the same "tank" (either both in the sump or both in the display) is a safer way to set it up.

One of the old timers on this site had his probe knocked out of his tank so it was sensing air temps. His tank was near 100F IIRC before he realized what was going on. After hearing that story, I put a piece of tape on the temp sensor wire so that it's secured to my sump (it can't easily be knocked out when I'm doing maintenance etc).

If it's the STC-1000 I successfully used one on an incubator and now use one on my big tank to control my heat exchanger pump and a fan in the summer. I've never used one for higher amp applications but they've worked perfectly for me. I did burn out the heating relay on one trying to get a little creative with the wiring but that was entirely my fault. There's a less expensive unit that only controls heating or cooling but I've never tried that one.
