I bought mine prewired from Jehmco: http://www.jehmco.com/html/temperature_controller.html

They have a few different options to choose from, but if you are running 600w I would think you would go with the ETCI-1R.

This one? http://www.amazon.com/Elitech-All-P...r=8-2&keywords=digital+temperature+controller

Looks like the reviews on Amazon are mostly positive. The only thing is that the relay looks like it's rated for 10Amps on 110 Volts, whereas the Ranco is rated for 15Amps on 120 Volts. In other words, it can control a maximum of 1,100 watts where as the Ranco can control up to 1,800 watts. This looks like a solid little device as long as you are controlling less than 1,100 watts.

Dang, 6 of 'em? They are awesome. I really like mine too.

I came across a thread on another site where a guy had his temp probe in his tank and his heaters in his sump. His pump failed so water stopped circulating through his system. His temp probe was sensing the temp in the display tank, so it called on the heaters to come on, but the display water was never heated since his heaters were in his sump (keep in mind, at this point he had two separate bodies of water, since his pump died on him). His sump was near boiling when he saw what was going on; all of his live rock (saltwater setup) was nuked.

Based on that guys experience, I think placing the temp probe upstream from heaters but in the same "tank" (either both in the sump or both in the display) is a safer way to set it up.

One of the old timers on this site had his probe knocked out of his tank so it was sensing air temps. His tank was near 100F IIRC before he realized what was going on. After hearing that story, I put a piece of tape on the temp sensor wire so that it's secured to my sump (it can't easily be knocked out when I'm doing maintenance etc).

This is acouple very good examples of why u should keep your heater setting at 80 or 85. I keep mine at 85 and my Ranco temps are set at 75. Lets say my pumps fail and my heaters are in my sump. The temp prob is in the tank, the temp prob is going to send power to my heaters my heaters in the sump will power up only untill they hit 85. At 85 they will automatically turn off. Worst case my sumps will never go above 85. Its a great fail safe. Like I said, I have one on every one of my tanks, even the grow outs :). Great discussion!
