It’s Teddy Roosevelt’s fault that piranhas have a bad reputation. When exploring the amazon, the natives roped off a section of the river and starved the piranhas. Then they put a cow in and watched them go to town. Hence the piranha reputation.
They are still mean, but not the psychos people think they are.

Really, I read somewhere cardinal tetras only lived for 1.
For a fun fact: The tiny pea puffer has been recorded to live for 12 years in captivity, pretty impressive for a 1 inch long fish.
I’ve only heard of 3 for them. Just got mine over the weekend, looks like I’m gonna go for the record!

Can't say I experienced it as 12 years ago, I wasn't even keeping fish but the author of this care sheet is one of the best authorities on this kind of stuff.

Seems like they average 3-5, but extremely good care can result in extra long lifespan.
One thing I will disagree with there is when they say it must not be kept alone. They may be a schooling species, but this only works in huge tank. Too small a space will result in a dominant male killing off the rest. They seem to be territorial before they are schooling.
