Random fish death

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Meh, I wasn't gonna deal 3-4 day old corpses that made me gag and I sure as hell wasn't gonna force the people at petco to deal with them either. Dug a hole and threw the bag in it then put a big rock over it. I'd rather take a loss of almost $20 then deal with that smell and possibly make the car smell like it.

You would think that after getting ick from not quarantining a batch of silver dollars a few weeks ago I would learn to actually use the quarantine tank... I have one, I'm just too impatient to actually use it about 99% of the time when i get fish :/. I'll learn...eventually...
Also if it helps it was my water change day anyway.

But I had done the water change before I added them. Could the sudden change have done it? This is the first time I've ever had something like this happen to me.
I actually was planning to change the stock. Take out the angels, take out the leaf fish, and take out the bristlenose pleco. I have a few 55 gallon tanks I'm setting up so they were gonna go in those.
Hmm. I'm pretty sure a water change doesn't remove ammonia. I believe nitrites do, then nitrates remove nitrites... nitrates can then be removed with water change and or live plants.

How long has this tank been set up? Just wondering if the tank is cycled? Cats can be really sensitive to ammonia. If your bio load is too high and not properly cycled it may play a part in this. Are any of the other fish affected? If not maybe the stock was weak to begin with.

Also, don't be fooled with angels appearance to not be aggressive, they are sneaky. They are good at hiding their jerkiness. I lost many fish before realizing that they were closet monsters. Lol. But my wife loves them so I keep one...

Hmm, I'd say the tank has been set up for... I'm horrible at guessing time but I do know it has been set up for well over a year. You're right, I have seen my angels being aggressive but neither of them are aggressive to any of the bottom feeders. Literally no one ever messes with any of the bottom feeders. The most that ever happens is a cory gets pushed out of the way so the rainbow shark or pleco can get to some pellets. The angelfish, leaf fish, and rainbow shark all pick at each other when one of them gets in the way. It never gets bad, its just a simple little nip and it ends.
Oh I just realized something, there are also 2 pearl gouramis.

Ok the tank is officially on lock down code red. Nothing comes in, nothing goes out. I just found 2 dead kuhli loaches and 3 dead bublebee catfish. I saw one of my albino cories and his tail was completely gone and the body leading up to the tail was red. I saw another albino cory thats tail was starting to turn red and a bronze cory that had a pale spot on his head. My rainbow shark has what looks like to be a wound on his head. I'm going to be posting pictures of it if I can but my phone is so slow that im not sure that it'll even work. If all else fails I'll do what I've always done before when **** hits the fan. Lock down the tank and wait til the storm passes and just pick up whats left and rebuild.

Quarantine your new arrivals and spare yourself alot of issues.

Also observed the fish better in the pet store and no ammonia in your tank is key.
Wish I had never gotten them. Only caused me stress and for me to put a hole in my wall.

Just my own 2cents worth but I NEVER add a new fish to an established system until its been through bare minimum of 4 weeks quarentine. I also have a tendency to keep fewer fish in one tank than the maximum allowed. The quantity of life in the box doesn't equal the quality of life in the box. Its harder to maintain and balance such a confined ecosystem when its over croweded.

Anytime you get new fish, you need to quarantine them (I quarantine everything at least 2 months) before adding to the main tank. Especially when you get them from a big box store like P Co.
And I agree your tank is already way over stocked, and is probably why you had the ammonia spike in the first place.
If it were me, I'd cut back on stock, as whatever disease the new fish brought in takes some out, and not replace them.

Like I said, several of the fish were only there temporarily be it there tank was getting ready or something else. Oh and the disease is taking care of the stocking level pretty well. The death total is now upto 2 kuhli loaches, 3 cories, and 4 bumblebee catfish. I have no idea what this disease is but it's hitting hard and hitting fast.
And the tank wasn't way over stocked. I know it was a little overstocked but it wasn't way overstocked as you said. I know that at least. Just to prove it Right before my water changes the nitrites, nitrates, and ammonia always read perfectly. 0's across the tests.
