are their any downsides to having snails in the tank??

downsides... they could multiply like crazy and it'll be almost impossible to get rid of them.

I have a few snails in my tank, but they are Apple snails so i keep an eye on them.

That's a malaysian trumpet snail. Upsides are they aerate the substrate, keep it clean of rotting food, and take care of algae. Downsides are that if you overfeed, they can multiply out of control. Keep your feeding down to only what the fish will eat in a few minutes, and you shouldn't have any problem.
