Rank Aggressive Amphilophus Species ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Having only kept 5 of the 20 species in the genus, it would be hard to truly rate aggression in the ones I haven't kept.
Having said that I have never found any to be overly more aggressive than any other cichlid, in the proper size tanks.
I kept A"amarillo in cichlid communities until mature, but that's how I handle most species, once mature a pair always seem to need their own 6 ft tank.

Young amarillo above in a community, below mature.

I suppose A trimaculatus could be considered up a the top of the aggression scale, but again I gave a pair a 150 gal to themselves..

A flaveolus below, as you can see divider added.

A lyons i seems to me the least aggressive

I also kept mid-evils early on, and never found them overly aggressive except when crammed in too, small tanks, which is the whole caveat with cichlids, I don't believe any are overly aggressive if kept in properly sized tanks, unless of course they have evolved to be the only cichlid in their habitat. Those loner types defy all boundaries.

Would like to get Trimaculatus and possibly house them in some sort of community- given the right tank size. How would you describe trimac temperament?

I would describe trimacs as non-community tank cichlids, and compared to the other Amphilophines I've kept, at the top of the aggression scale, unless your tank is 300 plus gallons.
They might work as juvies for a year in a community.

Gotcha. Was planning on add juvenile trimac with the rest of my cichlids in 6ft grow out tank ( juvenile freddy, breidohri, argentea)... plan on ordering 350 gallon 96x36x24 soon

Have you kept Amphilophus hogaboomorum- If so could you give me your experience with that particular Amphilophus Species? Would appreciate

I haven’t kept every amphilophus but of the ones Ive had so far my Hoga was the worst. It was aggressive toward the midas and red devils that were kept with it. Non stop chasing

When it was rehomed this guy too over, a Petsmart red devil who was a total puppy compared to the hoga

My trimac is solo so I cant comment on its aggression... but it does have attitude

I am currently growing out some other midas and Sagittae and will say the Sagittae are pretty vicious and take on much bigger midas than themselves. Curious to see what happens as they mature.

Very good looking trimac and Midas ya got there. Have ya had anybody pair up in your amph community tank yet? I would imagine pure chaos if that did happen.

I have kept hogaboomorum and found them to be similar to all the other large growing amphilophus. Lyonsi is probably the least aggressive, my hogaboomorum beat the crap out of a similar sized lyonsi. But it left all the other cichlids in it's 6 ft tank alone as i remember, even had a chancho in there and it didn't care. Just didn't like that male lyonsi.
