rant on 125s

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This was turning into an interesting discussion but i've been totally thrown now by duanes duanes and his penchant for bald headed birds with one leg. The burning question now of course, one i know you're all dying to hear the answer to.....

Do you prefer your bald headed birds with one leg from central or south america? :grinyes:

At my age, taking anything I can get in that regard is now the name of the game, Africa, Nicaragua, Seychelles, beggars can't be choosers.
When I was young and on the road for my job, I realized the world was very small, and it was inherently dangerous to combine more than one from any one locality.
This may be the impetus for spill over into my separation anal-ness in the fish world.
My current main squeeze is from England via Israel, so sleeping with one eye open is of paramount importance.

Definitely appreciate natural aquascapes, but i think theres some really cool artificially decorated tanks that look great too. I have no problem with colorful gravel and rocks. I may put together a dedicated flowerhorn tank with exactly that kind of decor one day.

Mushutherhinoscorpion Mushutherhinoscorpion had or has an eel tank with a great looking skull theme.
Still do

I’m getting to a point in my intolerance...

Lol, this whole post had me snorting so much coffee I half-drowned, half-choked. :)

duanes duanes , it sounds like we are at the same age, and the same point in the development of our specialized ideas regarding the way things should be. But...as much as I empathize with your ideas...I must ask: how can you possibly lump left-legged and right-legged bald women together in the same category? A left-legged bald woman, hopefully with a few tattoos a lazy eye, is a sensual delight. But...a right-legged woman???

My skin crawls at the mere thought! :)

I'm really late to the game on this thread.
If I ever came across a great deal on a 125 I'd certainly consider buying one. The 125 is a bit thin & shallow for my liking.
IMO, the five foot 120 long is a better choice, a more boxy foot print.
In 1968 I was guilty of decorating my tank with neon colored, bubbling plastic figurines, treasure chests & deep sea divers. The Zebra Danios, Guppies, Siamese fighting fish & neon tetras loved it.
I also had small aquarium mirror inside the tank so the betta could attack it's own reflection. Things have changed since then.
I have to admit that those that scape their 125's with plastic decor & neon substrate come across as beginners, but in the scheme of things, what difference does it make? Lol.
I used to be a bio type centered snob regarding species, and was a little judgemental towards those of unlike beliefs. Actually it takes a lot of skill or unbelievable luck to successfully keep a mixed bag of fish species.

Oh, no...why did you have to mention The Diver?

The Diver came from K-mart around 1970, as did almost all of my aquarium fish and supplies. He was a mean-looking little dude about 5 inches tall, holding a treasure chest under one arm and raising a knife menacingly in the other hand. He had a spigot sticking out of the back of his head to allow the attachment of an airline which allowed him to emit bubbles.

For the first few years of my aquarium-keeping life he lived in that single 5-gallon tank I owned, standing in the middle of the rainbow gravel bed and bubbling like an Alka Seltzer tablet on steroids. On one occasion, during a tank cleaning episode, my dog stole him; I found him again years later, buried in the garden, a bit the worse for wear. Cleaned him up, brought him inside, and just sat him on the shelf next to my tank.

He survived another 45 or so years with me, packed away whenever I moved, never going into a tank again but always nearby. No longer on display to the public, he was just too chewed up, but he was an old buddy who lived happily in my fish rooms over the years. A year or so back, my wife "found" him on the floor where he had fallen from the shelf...and she tossed him! The woman simply does not understand nostalgia. I explained to her that The Diver and I had a relationship about 50% longer than the one she and I share. She was apologetic; I was crushed.

She even offered to buy me a replacement. A replacement! As if such a thing could be done...:(

The moral of the story? All fish rooms need a lock on the door...

I too think the boxy 120 is a good model too, probably the best for a singular reasonably sized wet pet type fish

I'm an equal leg enjoyer, as long as one is gone, and of course any tattoos, and a lazy eye are absolute sweeteners.
I am a snob, and purist when it comes to fish though.

I actually like both natural and artificial looking tanks, provided they look deliberate not an accident. Extremes in either direction can look crappy. I've seen REALLY tacky fake tanks, where the loud colored stuff gets faded and funky...I've seen nasty / dingy looking natural tanks that look like mud pits full of mulm, scrap and algae. Both can be beautiful, both can be a hot mess...its about maintenance whatever style you choose.

I go more for the lush, surreal look. It isn't specifically 'natural' but most of the decor is, just the application is different. The fish seem to love it so I guess that's all that matters. They explore nooks and crannies 24/7.

Flowerhorns are the only fish I would go totally artificial with due to their decorative appearance and bright color. They'd look pretty damn weird in say a blackwater tank.

Now excuse me while I sip tea with fine bone china, pinky up. I'm scheduling viewings of my blue sand three days a week, noon to 3pm. Tea cookies are offered.

And for you macho guys oozing testosterone, don't forget the dovii tanks with skulls, knives, and guns. Plastic grenades are optional.
