Raphael catfish with oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think you would have any problems with them, but be prepared to never see the raphaels. My experience with them is that they are about as resilient a fish you can find, but they are never out and about when the lights are on in the tank.

Plus, keep in mind if you are adding the catfish at a smaller size the Oscar is quite likely to attempt to eat them.

yeah as long as they have some time to grow out and get ahead of the O then it shouldnt be an issue, but yeah like others said you will barely every see the raphaels though, why dont you get a nice shoal of pictus or something, they are active and will all swim around together. also as far as i know the spotted raphaels dont get as big so if you go with the raphael make sure it is the striped kind since once an O if full grown it could try to eat the spotted and would probably choke on the spines...

i have a Raphael cat fish about 7 in and he always hides durning the day when the lights go out he goes nuts. and like they said if the O is bigger then the cat fish or any other fish they will try to eat them

Hello sarah,
I actually wanted pictus catfish before I wanted the raphaels but I heard that they don't live well with the oscars. Is this true?

I dont think an oscar will mess with the raphael cats at all. I've had both in the same tank before, never had any problems that i've seen. But like everyone else is sayin, i barely ever seen the raphaels anyways lol.

i have had oscars with pictus before with no issues the trick is to get the pictus first and allow them to grow a bit first and then get the smallest oscar you can find, usually when they grow up with them they dont see them as food, now trying to add a small pictus to a full grown Os tank would def be asking for trouble but as a baby it should be ok since they mainly stay at the bottom

of course even this is no guarantee, there are always to random fish with personalities that make them want to try and eat anything moving in their tank no matter what, or even just want to straight up kill anything so of course its still a cichlid and there are no guarantees

I wouldn't suggest it. Ralfs are some thorny little fish. If you could find a larger striped ralf you would be ok. In with my O's i have a full grown african feather-finned syndontis with no problems.

My Oscars and Striped Raphael are very good together. They swim together back and forth across the tank together all the time. They are really friendly and seem to enjoy each others company. It will work but just make sure the Striped Raphael is not to small in comparison to your Oscars.
