rapheal and jag catfish question??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Both fish like to hide all the time but the Jaguar catfish is territorial and will defend its hiding spot viciously while the Rapheal catfish won't. If there aren't a lot of hiding spots for all the catfish, you may run into problems. I'm guessing you could go with several Rapheals but if you wanted to combine the species, your best bet might be to get only 1 Jaguar cat.

I agree with the above post. And the number of raphs you could keep depends on what species they are. Personally, I'd go with just a few jags, raphs are probably the most boring fish I have ever kept; I never saw mine except during water changes, when I took the driftwood out, it wouldn't even come out during feeding time.

Well, I have one false jag with five raphaels and an L200 and all is well so far. In a 75g, considering they get on average around 7" and fat, I'd do one jag and three striped raphaels. But that would also depend on your current stocking levels. If it's just the cats, more raphs are in the picture. If the tank already has other fish in it, you'll want to list them. If it's the Oscar and Pleco in your stock list, I'd advise against adding any fish at all. The Oscar/Pleco team will easily outgrow a 90 gallon. Don't believe me? Check your nitrAtes.

 Most of your threads are about adding a raphael cat. But you don't have room for one, and you know that or else you would have quit asking about them and bought one a long time ago. So is this just a way to express your raphael-ness until you have more tanks or upgrade?

Thats interesting that so many people say their raphaels are never out or active. Mine is so active! I have a 5-6'' striped raphael catfish and it is so fun to watch. It is my favorite catfish. He loves to mess with my pleco's and pictus. Its like hes playing with them. They put on their "back off" bit like usual when another catfish comes by them or their food but the raphael will swim all over them and around them and pick up their pellet and drop it... its hilarious. To me, this fish is the closest related to a dog than I have ever seen. I love him. He does go into his hiding spot for hours but do you expect every fish to be active 24 hours of the day? A fish has got to relax! :grinno:

He is the only raphy in there? It is a rarity to have a solo specimen that active. Although, having a lot of cavework and wood does help a lot. Never let that fish go, man. Very cool to have an active raph. The best (p. armulatus) one I have comes out as soon as the tank lights go off. The amblydoras nauticus are more given to being seen during the day.

I have no experience with striped raphs (or if I do, it was a very long time ago, and I have just forgotten about it by now), but my spotted raph literally did nothing. I often wondered if it was even still alive since it never came out, not even at night.
