My Cichlids, Blood Parrot and EBJD in particular, seem to be breathing quite rapidly. No one in the tank is breathing off the surface of the water or anything like that though. Is this a problem, or do they just naturally bat their gills faster than we breath?

All chemical levels are fine.

Thanks

By chemical levels, you mena paramteres, right? Wha are they?

And what is the temperature?

Watch your temps....My guess is too warm water..

Temp is at 79F. Yes I meant parameters, sorry. Nitrite is 0ppm, Ammonia is 0ppm, Nitrate is 20ppm, pH is at 7.1. I don't have precise tests for hardness or KH, just the test strips, but they have the water at "very hard", and KH at what looks like 120ppm. I don't see anything resembling a flagellate.

So does that mean the temp is probably too high, or just that I should add another aerator?

Thanks again

You would not see flagellates with the naked eye, but heavy breathing is a symptom of flagellates on the gill plate. They steal oxygen from the fish hence the fish starts piping for air.

What are you using for filtration ? I took the hob filter off my 75 because I had an fx5 on it and all my fish started to breath hard within an hour so movement on the surface of the water is important, and I'd think 79 is a little high

A 125 gallon per hr cascade canister, and a 60 gallon per hr aquaclear HOB.

79F is 26C.

Not the warmth i meant. It is not from that.

Has something stressed them? Are they sill like that?
