You could have fantastic mechanical filtration (fish waste is still in there, like sweeping dirt under the rug) & chemical filtration (which only removes toxic chemicals from the water column) but you still have nothing in there to break down ammonia to nitrite & nitrite to less harmful nitrate.

i'm well aware of that, however even when changing the water from 1.018 to 1.014 i didn't have any problems with ammonia or nitrites. not something i would recommend but it happened because i messed up my salt mix.

This is only as a precaution & mostly when raising the SG from FW-BW.
