Rapps F0 umbies a bit weak??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
As these are the only VERIFIABLE wild caught umbees you can expect them to be a bit touchier than those from other sources. They haven't been exposed to some of the nasties which may be in our tanks, but the big thing is they've endured a ton of stress during the collection process. Stress makes them more susceptible to all kinds of issues.

Good water, good food, and a comfortable environment (i.e. not cramped, no aggression, lots of dither type fish) is the best medicine.

I'm just stoked that Jeff got wild umbees in! All those other so-called wild fish are just figments of imagination! Haha!

Not sure but the fin rots could be due to ammonia burns caused during shipping from excessive waste produce by the fishes.

John what are you currently using to treat the pink fleshy growth?

the fin rot is resolved with mine and evry one elses umbies, but I dont know what to do about the swollen pink flesh protruding from between a couple scales. I been doing water changes, salt, and temp at 82. Any suggestions?? I dont know if this is a parasite. Metrodiazinole??

Im happy about it too, but this is an issue that many of us have not encountered because we've never had wild caught umbies. There are other wild caught umbies btw. Our friends from canada bring them in once in a while, and only the hard core fish keepers pay to ship them in.

I had my largest male get some kind of growth on his fins turning into a huge tummer looking thing. THis was years ago. I got like 6 fry from Jeff and only one had problems.

fry? If they were little, than I think they must not have been wild caught. The issue isnt Rapps but rather the wild umbie that he has for sale. Im thinking they are not as hardy as the common f100 umbies in America

My 7" umbee just recovered from this "swollen pink flesh" looking infection. It took a month before it finally closed and healed. I did not medicate the tank but did big water changes twice a week. Temp is at 82 degrees. I've lost festae's and umbee's from this. I've noticed that it happens when I mix SA cichlids with CA cichlids. It could be just water quality.....SA cichlids are more sensitive to water quality. Just my observation and experience.

Fo fish are not as hardy as tank bred.I've noticed this with many Ca/SA cichlids.I believe this is due too the stress of being collected and then being kept captive.I prefer F1

Lots of people SAY they sell wild caught dovii, but most have been proven to simply be pond raised on a fish farm in Florida. There is one key source down there that has been pushing "wild" cichlids for years.

It is quite difficult and expensive to legally collect and import wild umbees. Anyone who has done so could easily show proof. Oliver and Jeff are the only two sources I know of recently. If I didn't get one from them, I wouldn't trust it to be wild.

Regarding the pink fleshy growth, I'd let it lie for a while as long as the fish shows no symptoms that differ from the other fish. Of course, concentrate on water quality, etc. but don't add stress by over-medicating. That could be a viral lesion that will go away with time.

I completely agree 100% with this comment, that why I was really ahppy he got in F1 bahia oscars.

F1s seem to def have diff body shapes(maybe a positive or negative) and stronger immune systems, comfort with the tank environment, better attitudes, etc

some may disagree, and make the argument that every fish is different

We take risks when buying wild caught fish. Umbees need clean water and a good diet to stay healthy. I still have my wild Umbees from Jeff and the male is amazing. He's about 8" now and doing great! Two of my buds here on Long Island also have some of the F0 Umbees Jeff brought in and they are also doing great. One of the pairs recently spawned and we have a group of about 400 F1 fry we are raising. Sorry to hear about the trouble you are having with yours Rambo. Keep the water clean and good luck.
