Rare Black Bass Project

And NJ winters get colder than Alabama & Georgia. You know NJ do have an icefishing season, that should be enough to tell you something....like I said before, there is a reason WHY Florida largemouth bass and coppernose bluegill are not stocked in colder northern regions.

Okay couldn't read the whole post before I responded to this!!! There are LMB in New York along with many other northern states so I don't see why they couldn't last?

Is there a species difference in LMB in florida vs LMB in northern states?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Although I fish FW a lot I know tons more about marine spices then FW.

Also back to the thread I'd love to see this plan work out. I have been thinking about turning a 180 into a tank for 3+ LMB.

Florida Largemouth is a subspecies of Largemouth Bass and there are difference between Florida and Northern LMB. Florida LMB was unable to adapt to cold temperatures so that's why they are limited to the southern United States. Even FL x Northern hybrids can tolerance cold temperatures but only for short periods.

The OP is keeping sub species of bass that are native to very southern drainage's including Florida. That means they tolerate southern climates like MN was saying.

A little known fact is that most bass prefer swift currents. This can be shown by the places that most bass species are caught. A few have adapted to lake/reservoir lifestyle, but the Suwanee is not one of them. Also, a single proven pair of any species of black bass almost always needs 15 square feet or more to breed. There are always exceptions to the rule and I wish you the best of luck, but I think you'd have better luck with a species more suited to pond environment and a bigger pond.

I forget about that one, most bass species have special spawning requirements. In fact most bass species (except LMB) have poor reproduction success rate in the ponds, which that is why we have some trouble with rearing/spawning smallmouth bass in ponds back at the fish hatchery.

raise that lip!
Pull the remaining liner up and over some 2x4's like a planter bed.
It will give it more depth and a cleaner look if done right.
If we didnt get snow i would build one and show ya.
But I would be just making a bath for the bears....so that wont happen anytime soon.

Eventhough it's not a true bass, you should try rock bass. I caught one fishing in Lake George and they are awesome looking fish. They can defently tolerate the water here, you might need a small heat. I must say I know nothing about breeding them so can't give you advice on that. It can't be that hard they are every were in the lake.

I think the OP has abandoned the project. Did anyone even see pictures of the fish, or just the final pond? Yeah... I doubt the kid even got the fish. He just said he has a connect or something.

He's 14 year old kid so he might be grounded or something haha!
