I dont know what your vendor has been drinking, but unless a miracle happens golded toads Bufo perigletes (I hope Im spelling rigth) are gone for good. And you have MANY examples of species rare in the wild, higly endangered or even extinct that are VERY comon in captivity, crested geckos, fidji iguanas, cyclura iguanas, radiated tortoises, many asian species of turtles, several species of snakes, etc, and this is only reptiles, not including fish, amphibs and birds (a few mamals too but this is more for zoo agendas).snakefin;4409063; said:I don't think the pet trade idea is pretty feasible. Apart from a bunch of really really enthusiastic people who actually care and give their darn best to their herps, the rest are just either people who are herping to earn large amounts of money or keeping reptiles for the hype of it. Unless the critically endangered frog species get into genuine hobby hands, if not, they are just a waste and free kill when entering the pet trade, especially when arriving a reputable vendors.
Golden toads? They are still alive in captivity though. But going at a price of 100k. Supposedly what I hear from my vendor, but entirely no backup evidence apart from his word.
Yes many species are but that is the least problem in keeping them healty in captivity.snakefin;4409066; said:One more thing, aren't atelopus just specific of altitudes and therefore temperatures?
I would say very unlikely, the known range is very well studied and even if some relict population survived whatever that killed them in the first place, now cytric fungus in full force got it for shure.snakefin;4415386; said:I'll take your word for it. But golden toads? Not half possible to you?
They died out because of the costruction of a dam that ocupied like 95% of the known range and plus cytric fungus....not a chance. I agree, it is more likely to fail.EricIvins;4415607; said:Though the intentions are good, the whole project will probably fail like most re-introductions........
They died out for a reason, and I'm quite sure that has something to do with Humans.......And Humans aren't going anywhere anytime soon........
