rare fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It would be helpful to have some information like: your tank size and setup (ie filtration, wc schedule, etc.), your level of experience in the hobby, your budget, and what type of fish you're looking for.

I just purchased a 135 gallon tank and is now fully cycled and ready to add fishes. my good friend and fellow MFK member mrcrane advised that i should upgrade now. I am now looking for a 225 gallon or higher aquarium. i am currently running two fluval fx5 and still learning about this new found hobby of mind. As far as my budget goes, i'm willing to pay the extra bucks for a fish that i really like. i want to see it grow into a monster. however, i'm not too familiar with names or specie types.

look around and get ideas look into photo threads of peoples tanks, and see what you know you like, then go from there- and work on that rare fish later

Really nothing worse in the world than shelling out big bucks and killing the fish on a dumb newbie mistake

How big do the siniperca perches get?? Can I put one in a 75 gallon tank

Coreoperca Herzi grows to only about 9 or so inches, but are rarer than most. Sinipercas can get big (At least on the case of Scherzeri and Chuatsi), depending on the kind. My advice would be to google some info and discuss with some of the guys who have had experience with them.

I'm not sure how i can find rare fishes in Long Beach... the local fish store has nothing to offer. I've been on a fish hunt the past 2 weeks looking for something out of the ordinary. I don't know too much about fish species or names but i guess it's part of being a new hobbyist.

Contact some of the importers on this forum and see if they can bring them in. With your tank dimensions, at least some of the Siniperca and Coreoperca Perches will work. If you want to try, about two or three Red Mahseer or Erythrinus Erythrinus or Hoploerythrinus Unitaeniatus should work (Just remember to keep the tank well-filtered and clean/stable at all times).

Hope this works out for you. :) Would be nice to see more guys on this forum with epic fish.

Then I agree with AU_Arowana-RG's suggestions. Some other species you might want to look into are arowanas (some of which, you may need a larger tank for), datnoids, bichirs (especially rare color morphs like leucistic and melanistic specimens), puffers (eg Takifugu ocellatus), and cichla.

good suggestion indeed:) other awesome monster you can consider is datnoid pulcher...
I think its the high price tag that bars most people from getting them in the US rather than bannings.

As far as I know, people in Asia are more than willing to pay a pedigreed dog's price for a fish. Especially in Singapore, China, and Japan.

As for suggestions, well:

1) Perches - Look for Lates, Siniperca, and/or Coreoperca Perches. All are very rare (Except the Barramundi) and you'll enjoy keeping them. Tanganyikan Perches should be the rarest of this pack, but since they're vulnerable/endangered, I'm kind of hesitant suggesting them to you lest you breed/promote breeding them. Brings more awesome fish into the hobby. :grinno:

2) Mahseer - Hard to find in US, but becoming more and more common within the Asian Pet hobby. Likely because the extra price for a fish similar to a carp would turn off people. Trust me, they're more than worth it.

3) Wolf Fish - Becoming more common in the hobby, but still relatively rare. Many species and variants to choose from/look for.

4) Dorado and Brycon - Awesome Characins that pack a lot of character and a good amount of agression.

These are just some of the suggestions and I do hope that you succeed in your "wet dream". Good hunting to you. :)
