So something that's been in fresh water for nearly two years eating, swimming, growing (from 5" to almost 2ft) is not considered thriving?

:nilly: of coarse not :screwy: what are you thinking bro :nilly::ROFL::screwy:

I haven't kept BBGs but I have kept many brackish fish in fresh, #1 rule is better filtration and more regular water changes. SW and brackish fish that actually survive in fresh are supposed to urinate like 10 times as much to expell the extra water they absorb. This was documented in Dasyatis sabina in florida in several studies. Not all fish will make the transition to full fresh though so beware and even ones that survive usually have compromised immune systems. That being said many fish live with some form of compromised something or other in the aquarium, its sad that we consider a fish that lives 2-5 years a long lived fish when really most of our fish should be living well past 10 years easy. I to am guilty of loosing fish to miscellaneous issues, faulty heaters etc. I've never kept brackish/SW fish in fresh that died of the freshwater usually a mishap like beserker heater or something kills em, maybe because hazards of aquarium life I'm programmed for shortsightedness.
