Rare Indian Cichild (Wild Caught) :D

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This one isn't called 'green chromide". It's called the Canara Pearlspot. And it has been bred in captivity. There was chatter on the 'net about it and an article in TFH about the successful spawning in SoCal.

Such a neat body shape. The green on the face looks almost out of place against the strong gold and bronze.

You didn't provide any info though. What species? size? how many you have? any courtship?
the fish is an etroplus canarensis, google for the name

these fish right now are 3.5" in size and are mature.

there have been considerable number of tank breeding of these fish in india

the orange chromide and the green chromide, do belong to the same family of
Etroplus
green chromide - etroplus suratensis
orange chromide - etroplus maculatus

these are the canara pearlspot - etroplus canarensis

I've seen photos of them on forums half a dozen times before. Never in person.

But when you're sharing a rare species, you gotta give some info...

Neither green nor orange chromides. Look at the roman numerals on the side.

E. Canarensis is its own pure FW species. No captive breeding yet.
these have been bred in tanks, there were some tank bred ones available a few weeks ago, in the city where i live.

Green chromide would be the ummm..."common" name. Which is funny, I think, considering it's not common.
Funny thing about that particular common name concerning this genus...
First there's the common red or orange chromide (E. maculatus) then the green orange chromide - the wild form of E. maculatus. Then there's E. suratensis which I've seen sold and referred to widely as "green chromide". So i guess you can virtually call all 3 species "green chromide". Which is why I simply like to call them E. canarensis.
And as for no captive breeding yet...

I'm not sure who bred them first but whatever. I'm sure there are at least a couple more people who have bred them since. I lost contact with someone who had a group about ready to spawn and it wouldn't surprise me to learn that he succeeded. They're fascinating and rare species. Very nice!
the green chromide is the E maculatus
this is the canara pearlspot

Very cool! Unique body shape and colors. Thanks for sharing these guys.

I was unaware of captive breeding.
I am extremely ecstatic that we hobbyists have another species under our wing.
I have been taken to school.

(Ran out of money to buy TFH an economy and a half ago...)
