A hybrid? Between what? Its not a hybrid...a bybrid is a cross between species, long fins is a trait carried on through genes and gene manipulation. Its still the same species.

Oscars occur in almost every country on the S. Am. continent.
Redtailfool is right-those are wild collected fish. You can take a look at various wild oscars I've imported and photographed here in my photo gallery

Yes, the crassipiinnis species are only found in the extreme south! Beware if you are offered wild oscars by this name. The import of these fish is extremely uncommon due to the lack of commercial collection there.
Same for the 'bumblebee' oscar, cf. orbicularis. Extreme south Brazil is not fished for ornamentals with any frequency.
'Wild-type' oscars, those that are not colorful enough to be called tiger or red tiger, are bred in mass in Asia and even in ponds in Trinidad. They are called 'common' oscars and are grey with black.

I've always thought the long-fin oscars were ugly and retarded. I'm a fan of the normal finned oscar, whatever color it may be. I have about every color of oscar except a normal red. I would love to get my hands on crassipinnis, though...awesome fish. "Dragon" oscar is a new one on me...sounds like a fancy term for an ugly fish to sell it. ;)

The real fact is that there are 3 wild species of oscars, from 2 different regions of south america. Astronotus Crassipinnis, can only be found in Pantanal, this is in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The second, Astr. Ocellatus, only happens in Amazônia(amazon) . And the Astr. Orbiculatus can be found in both regions.
The one in the pic is the crassipinnis, the other probably a color of the Ocellatus(Venezuela->Amazon).

That top one looks like an oscar with a frontosa body....O__o

Wild Oscars are imported from time to time. I have one fish from Venezuela that only has one red occelus on it's tail and the rest of the body is chocolate brown most of the time. It also has a nice orange edge on its fins. My two domesticated Oscars have white edges on their fins.
