Rarest African tiger Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think the bottom line is that if you are successful and able to grow one out to it's full potential, your "reward" is having to deal with one of three scenarios:

1. Give it away to someone else who has a larger tank with current inhabitants that will work with a GATF (rarely happens)
2. Try to keep it in an undersized tank (that's messed up)
3. Euthanize (why raise one up, just to kill it?).

When the best option available is to give it away to someone else, I think you've put yourself in a tough predicament. Buying the fish in the first place is a stupid thing to do for 99.99% of MFKers. Unless you are JohnPTC or ArapaimaG, I haven't seen anyone else on here with tanks big enough to keep these brutes. These guys can't take everyone's growouts.

I completely agree but provided you are the small % and get a large enough footprint like exoticfishguy you can successfully care for "ONE" of these monsters, 1000+g tank for multiple.

As for me I'm buying a custom 300g+ tank with a 7x3x2 footprint so I can hold my guys for aslong as I can.
I plan to have over 6000gph current so that might help.

Is a 10'x4' footprint big enough for a fish that can grow 4'+?

I can see how a 4' aro or eel might work in a 4' wide tank, but I think that's too tight a fit for a 4' GATF. I fully realize it's a subjective topic...not trying to start a war here.

It will take a long, long time for it to get to 4 ft., if it ever happens at all, so we'll have to wait and see how it works out.

They don't reach 4ft in aquariums even 10000g tanks in Singapore, biggest I've ever seen in captivity was 3ft followed by exotics at 2ft so provided the footprint is big enough for the fish to turn without trouble and enough current I don't see why these guys would need a 1000+ tank like everyone says, I do see where your coming from tho. Rarest ATF is black Goliath by far.

I am convinced that this is the key. I have 4500 gph of current in the 150 that I have my GATF living in. It goes from right to left at the top of the tank and left to right at the bottom. I plan to add two more Koralia 1400's to the tank soon as well. It stirs the water up enough that I have a dramatic rapids/riffles effect on the water at the top of the tank. The current is enough that my guy has to always swim forward to maintain his position in the tank, and he has to really work at it at that. If he relaxes, he gets pushed to the back glass fairly quickly. He is fat, happy and growing nicely. I've grown him from 3.5" to 7" in about three months.

Well yes current is key, without current I notice my guys start to get irritated and more aggressive towards eachother right away but when the jets are on they swim happy together, so I have my jets running 24/7
