wouldnt worry bout heavier line as long as your drags loose

thats not always true, even if the drag is set extremely low, you still run the risk of something snapping your line just biting it. i usually run 20lb test when fishing for cats, and several times i have had my line snap before i even set the hook.

i've been hunting big cats recently. what do you think of my bait? i'm done with stink dough.

mackeral, rainbow trout and bass soaked in cow and pork blood and garlic extract from seachem. going to be adding chicken liver as well.

the trout and bass was ruined when our freezer was messed up so i figured i'd not put it to waste. the garlic i used to soak my finicky jag's pellets in.

fishing with a spinning reel and 18lb braided catline. using treble hooks.

If you want to catch a big catfish use a live sunfish as bait. Nothing better......

why use trebles? i would think you would get a much better hook set with some sort of circle hook

yeah...I don't see a point of treble hooks, I haven't lost a fish on a normal hook

sounds pretty nasty!! they should love it! myself i just buy a cheap rubermaid container put a couple quarts of chicken livers in it and let it set out for a few days and then cut some holes in it and chum the water then i use beef liver for bait (cut in 1/4" slices and use circle hooks) it seems to stay on better than chicken livers.... Good luck.

If there are indeed *monsters* where you are fishing you need to make sure you have a good rod/reel (IE; no $15 Wallyworld specials) and good 30lb + test line. Catfish get big, if you hook a 50lb fish and lose it because of to weak of line you'll be very upset. Not saying the 18lb test won't work but I always say better safe than sorry.

Also I would do as others said and stick with a normal hook, no need for treble if you buy good quality hooks. Make sure you get some big ones or they'll bend.

As for the bait, Catfish eat anything. You could toss an old pair of gym shorts in and probably catch one. With all the stuff you have to pick from you are bound to snag a good one.

The most common cat caught with "stink bait" are channels and one over 15lbs is a monster, over 25lb is RARE. He shouldnt worry about the line.

If he was using live or freshdead bait and fishing in an area with blues and flatties then that is a different story, of course all my monster flatheads have been caught off of 12lb line.
