LOL... people see and experience all sorts of things they can't explain or dont understand.... I'll trust the science
I'm also not arguing bad gene's can't happen, Inbreeding sure that's possible and can take it's toll over time, and of course being CB eliminates a lot of the natural selection that would take out the weaker individuals in the wild hence albinos, plat's, shot bodies etc.
With that said, this chance that it could be the cause doesn't mean every cb death is because of bad genes . It's far more likely that environmental factors like diet and care are probably the bigger issue in most cases. Could have been the breeders or with the owners. But when someone can't explain/understand it they google it, they read CB is bad and say "there you have it, bad genetics that killed my bichir" because they dont understand what went wrong or dont want to admit they may be the cause but that google answer gives them the easy blame free excuse.
But it's all just opinions now isn't it, ironically you'd need someone with the training in genetics to test these CB animals in order to see what the truth is and not people speaking off of what they see and believe...
You shouldn't blindly believe scientific studies, they are sometimes inaccurate. I trust mike w/ bichir info, hes probably one of the only specialty polypterus vendors in the US. CB is CB, most farms don't bother about stopping inbreeding, it would only take a year or 2 of the farm being operational for the polys to be completely messed up inbreeding wise. BUT as you say, the initial care for the spawn has to do with it too. I believe the combination of both is a double header for CB being weak. My albino senegal is CB and its doing great, IME and it seems many, many others concur that its the luck of the draw with CB polypterus. Of course every death isn't a direct cause of it being CB, it is for sure a contributing factor though. Weaker animals are weaker animals, if humans were inbred like that 20 generations in they would be horrid, sickly beings.
If someone was to buy baby WC endlis, grow them in the same room for side by side comparison to farmed CB endlis in another tank, I gurantee the CB will have more long term health issues then the WC.
That's all we have been saying, and I was hoping for the response I got on my Ornate, again thanks for the nice comments and input!!! I had figured it wouldn't display those since it was a hobbyist spawn and not a farm, and it was the first generation (F1) but I figured just to be safe I'd post it up and see what others had to say.
