I started out building my sumps similar to your style because I thought they had to be like all the rest. I was just overcomplicating them. I took pics of my last sump, I'll put up a link to the thread. There is no reason to make it as complicated as all that. :)

seems very simple but effective but dont know how this would work with a 200 gallon with heavy poopers!.. all you have is filter sock and some bags of media floating around?

I wouldn't do that...The filter pad can/will cause the water to be unevenly distributed on your drip plate and make a good bit of your media useless.

If you say so. It has worked for me in three different sumps I've built using that method. If you use egg crate to keep the pad off the drip plate, the water will still disperse over the drip plate just the same as if the filter pad wasn't there. You just need to use little squares of egg crate in the corners under the full size piece to keep a gap between the crate and drip plate.

Your water level is too high. You want as many scrubbies/ bioballs out of water as possible, with all the ceramic under water. All mechanical filtration should be done before bio, so either the sponge is in the wrong place or useless, or both. Also, the last baffle by the pump is not needed.

this ... hits all points. x2

I wrote this long post about needing eggcrate, then I realized you did say to use the eggcrate....Sorry, I missed the part about the eggcrate. Doh...

I have the same design running on a dual system, 180 and 90 gallon tanks. I have two socks one 7 inch and one 4 inch. You just have to add another sock and a couple more bags of media. Same thing just bigger. Its no more complicated.

Hahaha np. :)

I consider adding a space for a refugium to grow plants and or for an algae turf scrubber, especially if you're gonna have a high bio load.

No it won't, that's how I have both of mine and it distributes fine. Maybe if he only had a small trickle of water going thru but if the water flow is heavy, it's not a prob. I'd recommend using quilt batting cut to the size of tray. It will save a ton of money over buying filter material at the lfs.

We already established that. You are soooo 10 late. Buttttt, without the eggcrate, what I said will happen. I misread, said so up there...Now you have misread my misreading...
