They're generally sold for one of two reasons.
1) The people at the store don't know any better.
2) The people at the store do know better, but when they die, they can then tell it was because you missing nutrient X. They sell you that plus another terrestrial plant, and when it dies, they repeat with nutrient Y, and so on.
