i went with choice 2. I know what i'm doing, and i know quite a bit, but not even close to everything, i don't even have any nice monsters yet.

well i have an ok background knowledge and a lot of years of doing so, but i am fortunate to be clever enough to research the fish before buying it so i've never had a difficult time providing the correct environment for any fish i keep... a bit of learning of the natural history of the fish and a bit of common sense goes a long way in this hobby.
