RAW CHICKEN!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well, for like 2-3 months i've fed them only with raw chicken and turkey.
i haven't any trouble. i don't know if continuing that diet could kill the bichir.. but i don't like that risk ;)

Can somebody reading this post just try the raw poultry diet? Post your report here . I'm too chicken to feed mine. :)

I cut up 1 raw chicken drumsticks, trimmed the skin fat off into to dime size pieces. Only 2 out of the 5 polys and my silver datnoid would eat it. They haven't had food for about 5 days now before this poultry experiment. Figured all polys would be starved to go for it. Chicken is softer than tilapia, but the fatty texture made me nervous. Not sure how I feel about it yet, lol.....

Well.. i use mainly the chest of the chichen. it's less fat and easyer to slice and keep in the freezer. But i don't know if it's so much a big deal. if you avoid the skin, the most of fat go away with it. maybe it'll just pollute water.

Also.. i don't know if datnoides would'nt have trouble processing avian meat. (i never tried)
My tilapias and heros sometimes take poly's food.. but they're like a trash bin lol

This statement has been mentioned as well through other forums. Most feedbacks are similar to this -

Mammalia and poultry meat contains a lot of unsaturated fat which fish cannot digest due to their low body temperature. The fat gets stored in the liver and can eventually kill the fish.

This question is asked quite a bit on mfk for all the fish specie. Some say they have no issues with this, but most do not favor.

Alrighty, so I tried the raw poultry feed yesterday for the sake of trying. Figured it'd be ok since others have done so, and knowing beefheart works as a treat. I fed the chicken drumstick meat yesterday. I'm gonna withdraw future attempts, lol....

My 19" ansorgii and 10" bbw silver datnoid consumed about 85% of the skinless drumstick. Today my ansorgii regurgitated a stinky fatty piece. Avian meat seems to stay undigested in their stomachs much longer than any other raw feed (squid, tilapia, shrimp, smelt). Generally, I feel a large stomach bulge from a fz tilapia feed usually dissipate in about 24-36 hours. It's early but for me. Just to many uncertainties and I'm too 'chicken' to do it again. The end.

Taking one for the team, hands down to you bro, i personally cant do it, even you say you will change my polys:)

My view on raw chicken is most species, or a certain fish will be fine with it periodically. The concern is the ones that aren't able to digest it properly, therefore possibly causing premature death. Especially, if you have multiple species in one tank, i.e. stingray, polys, cichlids, pbass, datnoids, aros, etc... I'm certain it's not healthy as a main staple long term. If you look at all the threads asking this question. Just my opinion. The consensus is just a few months of usage for "when I'm out of pellets or tilapia' scenario.
