Ray Activity Level

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Of the 3 hystrix I have now, one goes up and down the sides and front of the tank most of the time. The other 2 cruise around the tank, but aren't nearly as active as the wall climber. Seems each ray has its own unique activity level/ personality. I haven't noticed a significant change as the rays age.

My sabina does this from time to time, and I started thinking that maybe since they're intelligent creatures, it might be similar to household cats -- they live in a confined environment with limited stimulation, and everything they need is provided to them vs. having to work for it, so once in a while cats get a wild hair up their butt and go running around the house all crazy. Maybe stingrays do the same, once in a while they get a wild streak and go zooming around to get it out of their system. Macy swims around 80% of the day, only rests on the bottom periodically for "naps". She likes to explore, sift through the sand and root around, do this thing where she "jumps" up toward the top and bounces off the sand with her rear fins, etc. She's usually a very chill fish, generally swimming around gently and very placid when I feed her or touch her. Then sometimes out of the blue she flies around the tank super-fast, running into the filter tubes, knocking the glass top lids open, splashing water everywhere, etc. There's been times where she was making so much noise she woke me up clear in my bedroom and I came running out to see if one of my cats fell in the tank or something. LOL! She doesn't seem stressed out, just hyper. I've offered food when she gets like this, thinking maybe she's extra hungry, but she doesn't always take it, so that must not be it. I've also changed the water to see if maybe she didn't like it, and that didn't affect her either. So I think it's just something that they do sometimes. :)
