Hey guys what's up? I'm just looking to get a collective poll I guess you can say on your rays activity level. Also, please state what kind of subscrate you have I hear rays raised in a bare bottom tank are more active.

I currently have two male motoro rays as some of you know and they are not very active, at least when I am watching...

I notice they are buried in the sand most of the time unless they are feeding. I have my tank in a high traffic area though so this is somewhat expected. I have my tank in my bedroom right next to my bed and I am always getting up and walking by the tank. I notice they are more active when I feed them less or on the one day a week in which I do not feed them. Lastly, I find late at night (around 3 or 4 in the morning) they are very active climbing the walls. I think this may because the lights are completely off and I am not passing by the tank at all startling them.

Please feel free to share your experience with your rays and their activity level.

i have my pair or marbles in a bare bottom tank. when i passes by the living room where the tank is located the two rays would move a little but as you have mentioned. they will climb the tank walls when it;s feeding time. other times they would move around the tank. i remember that my old setup with sand bottom they will either buried themselves or puffing sand up to find food. i think it all depends on the rays.. GL

2 retics in a play sand substrate tank. they are both quite active most of the time, love climbing the tank walls, playing on the bubbler, gliding through the water column. the only time they bury is if i'm doing a water change.

i have a male and female motoro with a sand bottom they are always moving when i come to the tank they come to me like a couple of puppies they are great.

they should never stop moving

sitting in one spot and hiding in the sand alot is usally a water quality issue

arent these rays fairly new still?

been in the tank for a few months. they are active right now skimming the sand blowing it looking for food. after I feed them they tend to bury themselves in the sand.

my cousin has a male and a female marble on a river sand...his rays never stop moving..feeding time or not,,constantly cleaning the walls lol!!!

My rays are on sand substrate, I would say a medium activity level. Sometimes buried sometimes not. Subdued lighting in medium traffic area. Water params pristine. High current.

To note, I'm not opposed to bare bottom, but burying is something a ray does naturaly and I for one like to give them the opportunity to do whatever they like. I wouldnt keep a fast moving active fish in a tank designed so that it cannot release energy by swimming so I will not keep a bottom dwelling fish without the comfort and security of a substrate that in the wild they very much have access to and take advantage of.

I have two tanks both with sand my two bigger motoros are on 2 inches of sand and they are constantly moving. The other tank has younger rays (retics and motoros) on a scatter of sand (half bare, half sand). Again they are moving constantly. I should mention that my tanks are at work and many people go by those tanks all the time.

I've kept from a single ray to as many as 6 per tank.... Actvity level of mine seemed to increase with # of rays in the tank. The tank with 6 is non-stop. Rare to see 2 sitting in the same spot very long unless they've just gorged themselves at feeding.
