Ok so this will not happen for a good couple of years but there is nothing like good advanced research right??

I have been promised now we are married and when we get a good steady house with a ground floor, I will be allowed my dream tank for rays. I will quite happily have a species only tank without requirement for tank mates. So have some fairly newbie questions that although have read all the stickies on here keep getting mixed up with names and sizes.

I understand there are 3 smaller species of ray but generally these are not the hardiest for the beginner. I will be honest I have fallen in love with the Leopoldi ... just not the size, I see there is a smaller species??

If to look at the smaller rays or motoro or leopoldi what are the minimum tanks (but tanks that would be for life for them?).

Do rays as pups do better with grow out tanks or are they ok and/or better in their permanent home from day one?

With rays and tank space is it a case of if you have the right housing dimensions for one, having a pair does not make it that much more awkward or is there a housing rule per ray as a guidance?

If having a ray only tank is there a good way to save on space by customised tank? Forgive me if this is naive question but very much in learner stage of how these fish are.. getting the required length and width good but could you lessen the depth as mostly bottom trawlers?

Have read much on the feeding and feeding problems, hopefully having to wean puffers in my time will help a little with this aspect..

Setup wise understand clear floor space best and no sharp edges, there seems to be debate over substrate?

In terms of the ray if harder to get etc for the one required, as this would be a dream tank willing to wait for the right ray unless it really was recommended to try an easier species and progress up the hardness scale.

Hope dont mind all the newbie questions, it will be years but felt best I got proper research in now for these things.

Also if peeps have any price guidance on tank setups and the pups themselves appreciated.

I am sorry to hear that some day you will be "ALLOWED" to have your ray tank. To bad it will never happen. You have already lost the battle for dominance with your wife.It will never be the right time for your ray tank. It's not going to happen.Get used to it.

LOL I am the wife! It is my husband that has promised ;) Originally I was allowed no fish and ended up with 10 tanks the last time we had a discussion XD The main reason we will be waiting is we wish to own our own place first rather than rented top floor flat where the tank would be impossible to get into with the stupid sliding doors and even with concrete flooring would be dubious to house a full life tank for one :)

It great you are researching well in advance of getting the rays and next tank.
If you read the sticky called freshwater sting ray profile, my miles,
There is tells you a number of the most popular fresh water rays, there characteristics, recommended juvenile and adult tank sizes. And comes with pic of the ray also.

I would always go for 3ft wide as minimum and 6 ft minimum length, as the first tank , for what ever species of you get rays at 4-5 inch disc size.
Then in roughly 2-3 years , you may need to upgrade (hystrix and retic can go in that for life IMO. )
I had a 5 x 2 and bought a 5 inch Leo. After 5 months I decided to upgrade as the Leo grew to 9 inch, and it just seemed to cramped . Also I wanted to a 2nd and 3rd ray.
Good luck.

You are the Wife!!! I stand corrected and am happy to say that in your case my earlier conclusion does not apply.....My advice to you would to be thinking about what kind of area and how much space you will need for your tank(s) when you go house hunting.

LOL dont worry ;) I am pretty determined to make this promise stick and being together 9 years already and newly married think I can make it work. That is REALLY good advice with house hunting. It was something I would not have thought of and can definitely say big thanks as access points to our current flat is a nightmare and really limited tanks and furniture in!

I also how it is "tank(s)" I really am attempting to be good and have a focus point :)

Thanks for minimum length, obviously bigger better but rough dimensions is something for me to aim for. I think as the time to plan etc definitely want to go for the tank for life option as always found upgrading stressful for me and the fish and then of course the tanks breed and you have MTS.

@Ade wow a Leo! What tank will you have to end up with for a healthy adult? I absolutely love the Leo colouration as so outstanding but afraid of the giant size...

With having 2 or 3 do the dimensions need to go up or is it just the water volume and/or filtration?

When you are ready you can come up and see my rays if you want to, I am based near Guildford in surrey, I can give you some tips based on my experiences. I have a marble motoro female who is over 12 inches now and a male pearl who is around 4 years and similar size.

I agree that 3 foot is minimum, 6 to 10 foot is about right for length. 4 foot front to back is best IMO but a bit of a pain to clean.

Worth looking in to drip systems with a permanent waste and fresh water feed using hma filter.

Thanks for the generous offer JustToby! It wont be for a fair while (dont wish to spook my other half even though he knows I am extremely single minded) I think the biggest challenge for me is to upgrade my way of thinking to such a large tank, the biggest I have dealt with was 100-120g (cant quite remember!). On the subject of tanks, where do you guys source these beasts? Thank you so much again JustToby

the leopoldi cost around 1500 and a motoro cost just around 125 and they are perfect for beginners.
