Ray an overview and guidance needed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I rent. Moving sucks, but I have 10x4 and got it into the basement with 4 guys. Keeping rays is great fun, but it's work too, work ithat's done the easiest planning ahead and working smarter, not harder. Half the fun is getting all Mcgyver on how to move a 180 gallon glass tank by yourself or a big ray tank with a small group of friends..... :)

Bite the bullet, get a pup, and the rest will "just happen" lol. No need to wait years, it will take years for them to grow big enough to need a tank that's permenant.....

as much as i love glass... go acrylic.. took my husband and my father to help me move a 120w the thing is a beast.... and completely concur when looking at houses... atm we live in a walk out basement ranch house... awwwwwesome! .... i told my husband we need similar for all our tanks when we buy. i love my 2 retics, dont be afraid if you like them. i went with them as they are smaller.. i guess in the uk cb hysterix are reasonable... another small species.

Great news on the prices on Leo's on the way down :D

Acrylic? Hadnt thought of that but think that is because this will be the biggest venture yet! Any recommended places to buy UK? Also for sake of argument on a smaller species what price bracket for a 6x3?

Currently we do rent in a top floor flat (luckily concrete floors) potentially we are looking to buy this one but realistically when we are in that position we would have a look around (esp. now I have an itinary ;))

LOL @ DB Junkie - dont tempt me! I might be tempted with a year to prep if did the old juvi tank and upgrade adult tank. On rough terms what juvi size tank would we be looking at for say a smaller species and how long? This would determine if to go for life tank and have potential less water quality problems with the right filtration or to be able to get a tank sooner with a growout tank.

Ok..no biting at this question as need to get my head into the needs of this particular fish and wish to understand better. Reading the profiles the footprint is always a rectangular tank. The width obviously to accomodate the fish to be able to turn easily in adult form, the height not being overly important unless considering breeding. The query I have is to cubic or circular tanks? I am unsure of actual gallons per fish but as an example no 3ft or larger cube or circular tank? Is it that the rays need a good length to flex and swim? (Please also do not take this as me wanting to get any smaller tank etc it is just I have been poking at large tanks and wonder why peeps dont use these for this type of fish).

Lastly a process I really need to understand is the filtration aspect. I know all about cycling and high filtration (espcially after puffers), but never had to filter a larger tank, I hear of sumps, auto water changes etc but these are things that only touched on, any good sources, setup threads you can point me too?

Thanks so much for the fab response from everyone, appreciate it and know you must have had lots of insane questions from other new potential ray keepers. :)
