ray and caiman lizards

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
with plenty of space and feedings anything is possible

I would have never thought to put those two animals together, but they're two of my favorites. The dracaena I've seen have pretty sharp nails, so I did cringe a bit when I saw it walking over the ray. Did it say where that exhibit was in the video?

No, I wish it did though... There are some really cool vids of the adults at the Nashville Zoo and their recent babies on youtube too.

Whats your opinion on it? You could always clip the lizards nails if you had to, since theyre not arboreal, and they would grind them down on rocks, driftwood, burrowing, etc.

I mean if someone just happened to have like a 20 x 10 tank and about 10 grand just lying around.... lol

So what about fish like arowanas, discus, TSN, or plecos? How about a matmata or pair or twist necks?

It all depends on the size of the fish. I've kept SA arowana with rays. Younger/smaller rays could probably be kept with discus, but eventually the discus would be food. The reverse is potentially true for the pimelodid. Individuals seem to have mixed opinions on plecos. In my experience it kind of depends on the species of plec and the size of the tank and I'd keep an eye on the ray for signs of the pleco chewing on it. I've never kept matas with rays but if the size of the tank is sufficient I'd think it would work. If ny twist-neck you mean Platemys, again would be alright while the ray is small.

The video is from Shedd. You're mistaken about the caiman lizards. While they are not arboreal in the way a tree boa is, they spend a fair amount of time climbing. They do not need long nails for that though.

Why would the twist necks only be alright while the ray is small? A fair size ray wouldnt eat an 8 inch or more turtle would it?....I wasnt worried about the matas because they only eat small fish whole and they dont bite. But they can be heavy and scratch the ray. How big do discus get? I thought they get about oscar size... What about oscars in all this? Sorry I know very little about fish, I'm trying to learn. Right now I'm all herps, but I'm trying to expand into fish, exotics, inverts, and birds...

Well I know they can be aboreal when they need to. I meant sorta as a rule.... But you can see burrowing lizards up in tress and arboreal lizards holed up in the ground. I know what you mean.

Damn Shedd! I want to go there so bad I hear so much about it! Where is that place anyway?

Thanks for responding!

If by twist neck you mean Platemys platycephala they are more like 4-5" and I don't think they would compete with a larger ray for food. In my experience they are pretty docile and shy. Discus stay a bit smaller than Oscar, but they are also a lot less aggressive eaters than Oscars. Oscars should be fine with rays.

Shedd is in Chicago

I thought Platemys was bigger than that. What about a mata though? They seem pretty harmless as long as tankmates cant fit in their mouth. Would any kind of Amazon catfish or pleco work?

Would discus get eaten? What would be ther best ray out of leopoldi, tiger, or flower?

Thanks!

The entire basis of this conversation can completely be summed up in 2 words..

TANK SIZE.

There is a thousand x + y = z variables, and we could sit here and discuss all the 'what if' possibilities, but unless you are working with 1000g+ plus size tanks, then there isn't much to debate.

If you do have a 1000g+ tank, then there is a good chance you have an idea of what combos could work based simply on experiences..

The bigger the tank, the more viable 'un-acceptable' options would be..

In general though.. Domestic Stingrays should be kept with; Domestic Stingrays. Tankmates, IMO, are for the advanced stingray keeper.
