hey guys,
i was researching and thinking about getting a retic. my question is i have a 55g right now. i wanted to stock it with 3 cichla 1 silver arowana and 1 retic. its only a growout. im getting a larger tank for xmas which i cant wait for :nilly:. will this combo work until i feel that they are big enough for the big tank? i only have pbass in it right now and they are about 1 inch. the arowana i am lookin for one around 6 inches or smaller and the retic as small as posible. i was also thinking about getting a motoro depending on what price i can find one at. i am getting a tank around 210g. so size wont be a problem.

Well to be honest a rectic maybe the best choice as they do stay smaller than a motoro but will still get big and even in the longrun that 210 will become too small. I'd let your bass gorw on a bit before id add a ray first as they will probably end up as food at that size. Therres plenty of good in info in the stickys on the forum have a good read up :)

With pbass and a aro, it will be really difficult to get food to the bottom for the ray. Most of the time you have to over feed to get food to drop past those guys. Retics are difficult to acclimate and take time before most start to eat. If I were you since the pbass are already in the tank, I would wait for the 210 gallon before I got a ray. You could use the 55 gallon to get the ray acclimated and eating and then move it over to the big tank.

are these fish compatible otherwise besides feeding? any agression issues? and also i only have a 700 canister on the tank along with 2 large pumps that give my tank a very large current. i have another 700 canister i need to get fixed. will the filtration be a problem?

i use a pvc pipe to feed my ray. i stick the pvc into the water all the way to the bottom, and then drop food inside the pipe.
learned this trick from another forum

That sounds like a neat trick. I'm going to try that.

Also, to the original poster, when you say "700 canister" are you talking about a cascade 700? If so, I think you're going to be underfiltered and overstocked in the 210.

can someone please answer this?

Tanks mates is hit and miss, no one can tell for sure. I've seen some aro's do some serious damage to rays. I do have an aro with 2 rays right now, so as you can see, it depends on the fish itself, all about hit and miss. No clue about pbass though, I've never kept one. You should just ditch the 210 and get yourself a bigger tank. 210 wont last too long with a silver arowana.

55 gallon tank is a nightmare fullstop for any rays. keeping the water quality consistant is such a chore in that volume of water especially with the amount of food going into that tank with arrowana the p.bass. wait until you get the bigger tank and then get the ray. i would also avoid the retic as they are great rays when feeding but the bass will outcompete it for food unless the retic was fully mature.

what kind of "chores" would i have to do to keep the water good? how many water changes would you say?
