Well... I believe I must say some words here...
At least for a while, rays are BANNED from the ornamental fish trade. Period. It means that capturing, transporting, selling and obviously EXPORTING them is forbidden. But this refers to WC specimens... Not to captive bred rays. Unfortunately, there are NO CAPTIVE BREEDING PROJECTS for freshwater stingrays here in Brazil. At least not officially. Not LEGALLY. All supposedly "breeders" get pups and/or pregnant females from the wild and claim these are CB. Any of these agreed to take pics of the rays pattern/ natural markings to allow the officials to check if the same adults are still alive next year... I wonder why.
IF anyone had a CB stock here, this person could get the neccessary permits/ paperwork to ship them overseas, or to sell them here in Brazil. Unfortunately, it's easier and cheaper to get and sell wild rays, so nobody wanted to get in a breeding facility for FW stingrays here. Much like what happens with SA arowanas, BTW.
So, there will be NO LEGAL BRAZILIAN RAYS, at least for a while. But this doesn't mean it's gonna be impossible to buy some... The zebra pleco is a brazilian endemic and officially endangered (off-trade) species and it's possible to get WC specimens around, isn't it? But I'd like to remember that these specimens are and will remain part of a crime, even if they're not illegal since they get out of Brazil.
Best regards.
Daniel.
