ray guy's thoughts??? bleach in my well?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have talked around. I think I am going to do it and seriously cut back on feedings. Turn off drips. Let bleach sit in my houses lines 24hrs. Then purge out all my lines real good. Then wait 5-6 days with no waterchanges continuing to run my faucets as much as possible to make sure it is all out of the lines. Then hook drips back up. My drip is not filtered by anything. Straight from well to faucet to tank.

I think you will be fine with regards to your tanks. Us "non-ballers" who have to do manual changes have gone 1-3 weeks without a water change when times were pressing (i.e. vacation with no reliable sitter) and our tanks and fish have been ok;). I would just cut back on feeding and let your fish ride out the bleach purification and you should be in business. I cannot offer any advice with regards to the well water but I do have a friend who lives out in the country and I (until now) have always thought that smell was normal for people who used well water.

Let us know how it turns out and I can pass the information along to her.

Good luck buddy.

Probably well worth investing in a chlorine test kit too so you can be sure the bleach is out of your drip line when you fire it back up.

I would agree that the bleach will probably only help "clean" the pump and plumbing lines. Intersting that you are smelling sulfur; we are on a well too but have never smelled it. We do have lots of iron in our water and have a household filter installed just after the pressure tank. I have to change the filter about every 3 weeks or so. Something you might want to think about.
As for water changes, you should be ok to turn the drip off for a few days. Maybe cut back on feedings.
Another option is to send your hystrix to me and I'll take care of them.

Jason, is your well very deep? I think i am around 230' or so. I have heard others around me say "you don't sterilize your well?" Like it is something that most people do on a regular basis "annually"

Good idea about the hystrix, but they are not going anywhere ;)

Just thought I would throw the offer out there:)

I have no idea how deep our well is. We are the 3rd or 4th owners of the house and the lady we bought from didn't know either. It should be written underneath the well cap but not on ours. We've lived in the house for just over 6 years but have never sterilzed the well.
