ok, so i want to start a ray project, and i am curious, how much sand is too much, when are they sexually mature? and what are the growth rates?

these questions i need answered are refering to motoro rays, i have been doing research on this matter for almost 2 years, and i am finally commiting to it. if you have any questions for me shoot, im starting this thread to learn, not only for me, but for whoever else is reading.

thank you for your advice, i have read the stickies, and i will be reading them some more, but anything i won't get from the stickies, i would like to gather here.

1" is about as deep as you want to go on sand

on males the claspers will be fairly large when they hit maturity on females its harder to say but i think around 3 years old for both

they seem to grow fairly quickly at first and then tapper off

No matter how much you think they will eat and poop double that

Provide plenty of room and filtration

Remove excess food and waste from your tank and keep up on your water changes and water testing and you should have no problems

They are a lot of work but well worth it

i have 2 of vamps motoros .. and they are great .. i have about 1/2" of sand .. but they move it around .. so some places are deeper then others ..

they love food .. lots of food .. but i think they are cleaner then my oscars .. as far as when they will start breeding . i would say between 2-3 years is ave .. some take longer ..

but you need to have a nice size footprint on your tank .. i would say around 30" wide and 6' long is a good place to look ..

your also going to need another tank to move your male into after they do the deed .. because the male will really beat up on the female and could kill the pups and or the female..

talk to vamp he has a pro set up and REALLY knows his stuff .. and he is an amazing guy ..

^ I agree

My male motoro is from vamptrev he is a great guy

If you can get a Pup from him they are almost bulletproof mine was eating nightcrawlers a few hours after it hit the tank water

would a 44" diameter rubbermaid tank/pond be big enough diameter? i would be running an fx5 on it, and getting it all up in proper running condition. my dank differs from .5" to 1.5" of sand through out my tank. when do you think they reach sexual maturity? and what should i have in the tank as hiding places?

I have 2xFx5 on 200Gallon tank, that works fine, it houses 2 yepezi and 3 motoro, only 6 inch disc tho.. I also have another 200gallon that i run Eheim 2080 and 60Litres backgroundfilter on. There i have 4x Motoro 10 inch.

that sounds pretty good.

Foot print more important then volume. Don't skimp on filtration. Have redundancies in order to plan for failures. Budget for food and other monthly or annual expenses. Make sure you have stable, healthy breeding stock with a back-up plan for deaths or immature stock. Have a nursery in place for the pups. Find buyers. Good luck.
