there have been reports of Giant Freshwater stingrays found in Thailand. They look just like the one your friends say in India. They have been reported to be found in the waters of India, Thailand and China. So this could be a baby one or something close to it. They are found in that area, so could be poss. Usually the babies are larger than the one in the picture you are showing, but also depends on its mothers size when she has them I guess.

WOW! could you imagine having one of those in a tank?!??! I would just build an inground pool, and drop it in there hahahaha that is huge!
 
ya, would need a very very VERY large area for a ray like that. And lots and lots of food to feed it..lol

Hmm.... there goes my plan for keeping one!
But I'm still leaning more towards the pale-edged one than the giant stingray for the pictured specimen. I guess I'll have to visit the fish market again to get better pics for a proper ID. Till then I'll read some more.....

BTW that giant stingray pic, if I'm correct, is from an awesome docu on discovery that was aired recently.
