Ray in a 220 gallon tank?

I personally wouldn't put any ray or a fire eel in a tank that size but it's a matter of opinion. Since you enjoy discus I'd suggest just keeping a large group of them. They would be a great size for your tank and would make a stunning display.

Through my research, I found that most recommend a 220 as a minimum for a fire eel. Of course, bigger is better but this is what I have to work with right now. If they end up getting too big and need a bigger tank than I can provide then I will look for a new home for them.

As far as keeping a ray, that is a big part of why I posted this thread. As I mentioned, some people say a "teacup" ray can be kept in a 125 while others say that even the smallest ray needs 300-400 gallons, some people even say larger.

As far as the discus go, I plan on growing them out from two at a time in a 29 gallon bare bottom grow out tank and then adding them over a few years time until I have a group of 8-12 of them.

Be careful of the misleading term "tea cup". It's used for many different ray pups (retics, orbs etc) by lfs and has very little to do with the size the ray will obtain.

Why a 29g growout for the discus? The discus will be better off going directly into the 220g

I have done a lot of research on growing out juvenile discus and it is recommended that they be kept in a smaller bare bottom grow out tank while juveniles because it is easier to keep up with water changes and parameters, and so that they don't have to hunt for the food too much. It's going to be a 29 gallon tank because that's what I already have and there is no way my wife will tolerate another tank after the 220 gallon tank. Otherwise, I would get another 55 and use it to grow them out four at a time.

It's good your looking into things before jumping in but keep in mind there is a lot of poor advice floating around out there. When I kept discus they went directly into a 750g. Your water parameters will be much easier to control in a 220 than a 29. They will have no problem finding food in there. Fish readily come to the place you drop in their food. Don't overthink things just provide good water, food and adequate space and you will be fine.
