I'm going to have to disagree on this one. I have moved a lot of rays around and I have never seen one act as though it misses a particular tankmate. You may notice that they are not as active because they are not in each other's way all the time or stressing each other out, or interacting as much.
I do think that fish can get used to a certian 'situation' so when something changes instinct may tell them that something is not right so a ray may spend some more time buried in the sand until they know it is safe again, but I bet you'd have a similiar reaction if you moved both to another set up, or changed something else significant.
