Ray Newbie, a Few questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my experience is this......once you have rays you become willing to get rid of EVERYTHING else!!! I used to have a full tank of gorgeous fish now I have a 500 gallon tank with 5 rays in it......why cause I couldn't imagine parting from the rays! Every other fish went if it even acted like it might pick on one of my rays and one by one they were all gone. Should I have kept the fish and gotten rid of the rays.....not a chance in Hell!!!!

hi monster ray keepers! ive been thinkin of gettin a ray but being a newbie myself ive got a few questions i hope some of u more experinced guys could help me out..tank size probably 5x3x2 feet

1. how many rays must i keep together in a tank? single? a pair? odd or even numbers?
2. how many males to females ratio?
3. same species together? or is it possible to mix with different species?

thanks!

Yes this is one of my concerns and I'm not really sure I'd be willing to give up the flagtail.

you will have to get rid of it they dont mix unless you are working from your house all day

i was doing it for about 3-4 years but its just not worth the risk for you to say you cant get rid of it then it must be big just take a look at the big front tooth that can do damage

i done different thing hit the flagtail with a chop stick bang on the tank everytime it sucked on the rays move it to the very small tank when he was bad they never learn

Thanks, yeah that's what I was finding reading other threads.

I only have 4 months experience with this combo and so far so good. My 2 rays (10-14" in disk) don't put up with the flagtail trying to suck their slime coat, but personally I wouldn't trust the flagtail with a new introduced pup. I have to agree 100% with grapedinox, rays are amazing to keep.

can i get some more input on this please..
why raw shrimp and not live fish?

do a search, or look through the setup and filtration section on fishless cycling.
cycling a tank with fish often puts a lot of stress on fish, up to death, whereas you can build your entire beneficial bacteria colony without having to put any living creature in hazards way. it is quite simple really.
