I have never breed rays before but might in the future and have read many times after birth that ray parents can be a problem and kill/eat younger pups.

Why is this?

Must one always remove the pup from the parents?

Please enlighten me. :)

I dont know the answer but I read an article (I think it was an IBAMA sponsored article) that FW rays were the only eslambranch (spelling?) that practiced brood care....I question the validity of it though.

Gr8 now im even more confused!!!:nilly:

The last two litters Ive had, I had two pups that had bite marks on them. So I know someone in my pond is going after the pups. I have a litter of motoros about two years ago that all got killed and eaten by the adults on the tank..

Question is why?!?!?!

Is it because rays are naturally curious and want to eat anything that fits into their mouths, including their own young?

i think it is diffrent with diffrent types of ray i think a motoro or a pearl may kill its own pups

when my pups were born the 1st time i took them out and put them in a small tank bare bottom the pups took a few days to settle and feed and a smaller tank was dam hard to maintain when you were trying to get the pups feeding the water turned bad fast

the 2nd time pups were born i left them in the main tank right after birth they covered themselfs with gravel and stayed their til lights out
as soon as lights were out the adults started swimming about more digging in the gravel when they came accross 1 of the pups it was like the adults were scared of the pups as soon as they felt then they would rush away real fast to the other end of the tank it was like that for about 3hrs then they got used to the pups being in the tank
it was funny to watch something so big scared of something so small

i would leave the pups in with the adults as they fed better and the water in the main tank was much better

i think it would be diffrent with motoro as the males are more agressive than p14

they may bite the pups but i dont think they mean to they are just seeing what it is

i also think unless you see the adults killed the pups then it may have been other fish in the tank that killed them if the pups are dead then yes the adults will chew and eat them

if you tied a smaller tank into the main tanks system its all the same water.......this is my plan when I start breeding rays... I think in the wild after birth the parents can just swim away but in a tank the pups and parents can't go there separate ways....

TRUE :D

if i kept my adults this was my next upgrade running a 7ft long x 12inch x 12inch tank on top of my tank mounted on the wall like a window box fill it with plants so it would act like a nitrate filter + it would be a place to put the pups just pump 1 of the exturnal filters in to it from the main tank then over flow back in to the main tank

they still needed the subtrate from bith as they hid in it just like they would in the wild :D

i found they fed better as they just followed the adults and ate what they ate monkey see monkey do

i have had my leo male kill a pup so i seperate my female but its a pain this next time i may just keep the male really well feed and see what happens i have noticed with motoros this does'nt seem to happen as much??

My pup was in with the parents for a few hours. Neither seemed to bother the pup. I did take the pup out and put her in her own tank though. It would have been really difficult to feed her if I had left her in the main tank. I plan on putting her back in the main tank in another month or so.
