having som problems with my retic. hasn't been eating ike he normally does( diet of ghost shrimp), and when i looked at him today, i noticed a red spot/ opening on his back, about 1/2
an inch across.any ideas as to what it might be?

not necessarily, if he water changes a lot there will be 0 reading, i have nitrates at 15-20ish ppm. my rays are acting funny now also, i'm in the northeast maybe its a weather change or something!

Even with water changes, unless he doing somthing major like 90% every day he should have a nitrate rate reading because there will always be ammonia (fish ****) in the tank and that willl always be converteed to nitrite then nitrate if the tank is cycled!

How many water changes you do?

i have only done one, a that was a month ago. besides that, i only top off the tank, and use alot of filtration. i currently run an eheim2215, with de-nitrate, purigen, and the regular bio/ mechanical media.

If your tank has only been setup a month with zero nitrates and only one water change your tank is not cycled regardless of filtration as filtration actually produces nitrates and does NOT remove them. Im not familiar with that purigen, but it most work really well for there not to be any nitrates and only one water change in a month! You did cycle your tank properly didnt you?
